1.1.1.10. Glossary: Linking Records¶
Note
Part of the Draft v4 User Guide: under review during beta testing.
These are the words WHG v4 uses on screen when you say how records relate to one another. Where the Record page or the Atlas shows one of these terms, this is what it means.
1.1.1.10.1. Link¶
A link is a statement you make that two records are, or are not, the same place. It is made in the Link sheet, opened from the Atlas, a Record page or a Locus page. A link is attributed to you, dated, and can be taken back. It is never final: someone else may disagree, and both statements are kept. See Linking records: same place, or not.
1.1.1.10.2. Same place¶
You think the two records describe the same place. This is the default choice in the Link sheet. Use it when the descriptions plausibly agree, even if their details differ (a different spelling, a slightly different position, a different date range).
1.1.1.10.3. Same place, exactly¶
Under Advanced in the Link sheet. You are sure the two records mean one and the same place. Use it rarely; Same place is right in most cases.
1.1.1.10.4. Not the same place¶
You are sure the two records describe different places. This is a deliberate statement, and it asks for a reason. It is not the same as passing over a suggestion: ignoring a suggestion records nothing about the world.
1.1.1.10.5. None of these fits¶
None of the suggested records is the same place as yours. This is a note about your review of one record, not a statement about the world. It can go out of date when new records are added, and it is shown only to you and your dataset team.
1.1.1.10.6. Not sure yet¶
You want to come back to this record later. Nothing is recorded about the places themselves.
1.1.1.10.7. Not yet checked¶
WHG has not yet been able to look for suggestions for this record.
1.1.1.10.8. Suggestion¶
A record WHG proposes as possibly the same place as one of yours. Suggestions are ordered by how likely they are:
Likely the same place: one clear suggestion.
Which one, if any?: several plausible suggestions.
Weak suggestions: possible, but unconvincing.
Nothing found: no suggestions.
Later: records you set aside with Not sure yet.
Choosing a suggestion makes a link. Passing it over makes nothing.
1.1.1.10.9. Finding suggestions¶
The automatic search that proposes suggestions. It never makes a link on your behalf.
1.1.1.10.10. Links (section of a Record page)¶
The Record page section that lists what has been stated about which other records describe the same place. It is currently headed Concordance and is being renamed Links. It shows who made each link and when. See Record Pages and the Concordance.
1.1.1.10.11. Record¶
One contributor’s account of a place, with its own names, locations, dates and sources. Several records may describe the same place.
1.1.1.10.12. Locus¶
A page that groups records that may be one place, so that the group can be cited. A Locus is not a record, and it is not itself a statement that the records are the same place. See Loci.
1.1.1.10.13. Private until your dataset is published¶
A link that involves a record in a dataset that is not yet public is visible only to you, your dataset team and WHG staff. It becomes visible when the dataset is published.
1.1.1.10.14. Review by the WHG team¶
Every dataset is reviewed by the WHG team before publication during beta. The review is separate from linking: you can start linking your records as soon as your upload has been validated.
1.1.1.10.15. Older WHG words¶
Reconciliation is the older WHG term for what v4 calls linking your records. The earlier reconciliation tools remain available during beta testing, alongside linking; see Guides & Tutorials.
